Founded in the late 16th century by people from the Malay Peninsula and the Karo Highlands, Medan stands at the confluence of the Deli and Babura Rivers. Capital of the Sultanate of Deli, the city was developed under the Dutch, who cleared land for tobacco plantations. Today, Medan is the center of government and commercial activity for Indonesia's western region. Despite being one of Indonesia's largest and most vibrant cities, thanks to its colonial architecture and melting pot of cultures – Chinese, Malay, Javanese, Sundanese, Batak and Karo - this historic city has retained much of its old-world charm.
