Kampung Batik Mangunan Offers Various Activities for Tourists
Kampung Batik Mangunan in Kalitirto, Berbah, Sleman District, has promoted itself as a tourist village where tourists can enjoy various activities such as learning traditional arts, farming, fishing, and producing traditional food.
Owner of Kampung Batik Mangunan, Guntur EP, explained that the Village was officially launched in 2011 and has gained popularity among tourists due its strategic location in Prambanan Street. Tourists can learn the craft of batik-making, play gamelan (traditional Javanese musical instrument), learn the traditional arts of ketoprak and wayang uwong, learn traditional dances and take a bike ride around the Village.
The Village offers various activities, including the plant-a-tree program for tourists as part of their go-green campaign. Tourists can plant a tree and is hoped to return regularly to the Village in the future to see the trees they planted. They are encouraged to plant medicinal trees that the local community can use. The Village also offers 10 houses for homestay program. The Program aims to introduce visitors of the local culture, foster the spirit to preserve traditional arts and cultures as well as promoting environmental awareness. The homestay program is also hoped to be a source of revenue for the local people.
Tourists will learn about the traditional cultivation system and perform “wiwitan” – a ritual practice during the rice harvest ceremony. “Wiwitan” aims to express gratitude to Gods – particularly Dewi Sri (the Goddess of Rice) for the rice harvested. Tourists will also be taught how to play gamelan and traditional dances with scarf (selendang). One will be guaranteed a memorable experience when visiting Kampung Batik Mangunan.
