Jurassic Park of the Eastern Island
It is no coincidence that Komodo Island National Park was confirmed as one of the seven worlds’ wonders by the New7Wonders alongside Amazon (Brazil), Halong Bay (Viet Nam), Igazu Falls (Argentina-Brazil), Jeju Island (South Korea), Puerto Princesa Underground Rivers (Philippines), and Table Mountain (South Africa).
Komodo Island deservedly snatched one of the top spots because along with Rinca Island, they are the natural habitat of a population of the giant reptile that lived some 60 million years ago. Komodo, or as the Westerners call it “dragon”, is undoubtedly the most interesting object in the islands.
Komodo is a carnivore sitting at the top of the food chain. They prey on goats, deer, wild boar, and birds. In certain circumstances, komodo can display cannibalism behavior where they prey on other komodo.
Tourists visiting Komodo Island are generally interested to watch the lizards from the Jurassic era at a close distance. However, the surrounding areas of Komodo and Rinca Islands are just as beautiful.
The Island’s native species encompass exotic flora such as sepang wood - used by locals as medicine and fabric dye - and tropical chestnut (Sterculia oblongata) which seeds are tasty and pea-like and are also used as medicine.
Komodo Island is located at the east of Sumbawa Island, separated by Sape Strait. Administratively, the Island is part of District of Komodo, West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. It is located at the western end of Nusa Tenggara province, which borders West Nusa Tenggara Province.
Tourists can get to Komodo Island by various methods of transportation. From Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara, rally package is offered from Senggigi-Gili Bedil-Satonda-Kalong Island-Komodo Island-Rinca and Labuhan Bajo. There is also another trip package from Maumere-Ende-Labuhan Bajo on to Komodo/Rinca Islands.
Tourists can also fly directly from Jakarta-Bali-Kupang and take smaller planes to Komodo Airport in Labuhan Bajo with Merpati, TransNusa or GTAir airlines.
Another alternative is through Muhammad Salahuddin Airport, Bima, Sumbawa Island, and continue with ferry through Sape Port to Labuhan Baju and Komodo Island; or from Lembar Port in Bima, through Sape to Labuhan Bajo. (Tribun Jogja)
