Biennale Jogja
Biennale Jogja is a biannual arts festival which has taken place regularly in Jogja since 1988. The Festival commemorated its 22nd years in 2011. As one of the most prominent arts and culture festivals in Indonesia, Biennale Jogja has become a benchmark of the development of arts in Indonesia. At last year’s Biennale Jogja XI, the organizing foundation focused on holding an international-scale art festival to establish dialogue, cooperation, and partnership among nations.
The Festival featured 40 Indonesian and Indian artists and had an overarching theme of “religiosity, spirituality, and belief” which attempted to present ways in which artists from the two countries addressed and interpreted their contemporary conditions, informed by their personal experiences, as also by the political structures of the countries they live in. The participants, represented by 25 Indonesian and 15 Indian artists, presented their works which represented the current social conditions. They presented their individual and group pieces, as well as community art projects to open dialogues among nations.
Aside from the main exhibition, there were several parallel programmes and special projects like the Equator Festival with the contemporary reinvention of the Ramayana ballet, seminars, artists and curators’ talks and community projects.
Some of the statues crafted by these artists were displayed for the general public. Along the Malioboro Road to the Zero KM, the public were able to enjoy the works of the artists. The sight of the public enjoying the work of arts and taking pictures for keepsake made for an interesting observation.
