No need to go abroad to spend your holiday. Central Java has an amazing exotic marine tourism spot, the islands of Karimunjawa.
Karimunjawa is an island in Java Sea, located in Jepara, in an archipelago with 27 islands. The Central Java provincial government has established Karimunjawa as the top marine tourism destination and the marine park is on the fourth place for the favourite destination in Central Java.
This archipelago is home to coral reef, mangrove forest, coastal forest, as well as almost 400 species of aquatic fauna, including 242 species of ornamental fish. Among them are white-bellied sea eagle, hawksbill turtle, and common green turtle. The coral reef in the island is one of the richest coral reef ecosystem in the Java Sea. Exotic is the best impression to describe the beautiful seascape of the islands.
To reach the island (located in three villages; Karimunjawa, Parang, Kemojang), the visitors has to cross the java sea through Tanjung Emas Harbour in Semarang and Kartini Beach Harbour in Jepara. The travel through Tanjung Emas could take up to 4 hours with KM Kartini Express and about 1.5 hours through Jepara with executive motorboat. The island is currently building airport for CASA-212 type aeroplanes.
As soon as you reach Karimunjawa pier, you will feast on a seascape of pristine water and a view of coral reef as well as beautiful green hills. There are many types of accommodations in Karimun Jawa, from hotels to homestay accommodation offered by the locals, depending on your taste and budget.
Once you are well rested from the boat trip, you will be guided by the local youths to the islands’ locations with a motor boat. Don’t forget to wear your life jacket for safety standards procedure.
There are various attractions you can choose; Gosong Island, Menjangan Island, Menjangan Kecil Island, Tanjunggelam, Cemara Besar Island, Cilik Island, karimunjawa, Tengah Island, which all will provide you with an exotic marine experience.
In Gosong island, we can dive and snorkel to see the underwater sights of many coral reefs. With a meter depth, visitors could clearly see the activities of ornamental fish and also feed bread to the fish.
When it is time for sunset, visitors will be directed to the white sandy beaches of Tanjunggelam. In this place, the photo hunters will not run out of objects to capture. With the sun slowly setting down in the glowing sea level, it is one of the moments where we admire the greatness of the creator of the universe that can genuinely shakes ones heart.
Before Maghrib prayer, the visitors will be taken back to the pier to rest in their lodging. If you want to get around the island, the locals also provided motorbike rent.
Don’t expect to find a place like music concerts you found in the big cities. Every Saturday night, the youth in the island get together in the town square located in the seashore. The local government usually screen films in the town square, but for the last couple of times the Jepara Tourism Department had showcased dangdut concerts.
However, don’t expect a grand stage like the ones you found in the big cities. The stage is only about 1,5 meter tall with the size of 4x5 meter.
For those who enjoy photography, sunrise is a moment that should not be missed. When the morning comes, you can ask the guide to take you to the best spot to see the sun rising.
At about 09.30, the guide will usually take you to Menjangan Besar Island. The island has a shark conservatory where visitors can swim, without touching, with the sharks. They also have banana boats with the capacity for five people.
Before leaving the island, don’t forget to hunt for souvenirs. Although the islands are far from city centres, you don’t have to worry because the island has marine souvenir centres provided by the locals, with its favourite gifts: anchovies. (M. Nur Huda)
