Mural is a beautiful art, generally created to convey a message, mostly positive ones. The art form often comes in the form of paintings although mural painting also includes writings conveying positive messages.
People who have visited Jogja will agree that Jogjakarta is the city of murals. In every corner of the city, we will find various themes and concepts of Mural art form made by artists, students, and the people of Jogja. As a contemporary art platform for creative self expression, Mural has not been considered as an activity that can bring harmony among its community. However in Jogja, Mural has become a space for the people to come together wherein they can exchange ideas and thoughts as well as incorporating social criticism in the creation of the art form.
The creation of Mural in Jogja is carried out by all members of the community, from artist, students, youth groups, as well as Mural art observers. It is usually initiated through a competition or sponsored by a corporation, although it is often that the community creates mural on their own. Mural has been positively welcomed by the people of Jogja. The local government show their support by providing public spaces for mural to add aesthetic improvement to the city. Many local business owners have embraced the mural community by allowing them to express themselves and to paint on the walls and gates of their stores.
The various mural themes in the city walls are made in accordance with what has been agreed. The Jogja’s mural community has poured their ideas and creations in the walls along many parts of the city streets and confirmed it as the city of arts and culture.
