Jogjakarta`s Kidul Square – popularly known as Alkid – is one of the must-visit tourist attractions in the city. The Square has become an icon of Jogjakarta. There are two weeping figs within the vicinity that created a local myth. Many of the locals believe that anyone who could pass the path between the two trees with closed eyes will have their wishes come true.
There used to be few hawkers selling a small variety of local dishes at the Square. The sight of people riding bikes or rickshaw after shopping at Dagadu Jogja – a famous local brands that sell cotton t-shirts – is common at the Square. In the past two years, Alkid has increasingly become a popular place for families. The rickshaws and bikes – available for rent – are adorned with lights in the shape of children’s favorite cartoon’s characters and are equipped with music player. These rides are known by the name of “odong-odong”.
The “odong-odong” is popular among visitors who would like to have fun as well as do their outdoor night workout. Visitors could go around the Square in the rides with friends, families, or their loved ones. Riding an “odong-odong” is a memorable experience as it allows visitors to interact not only with their friends and loved ones but also with other visitors. Imagine one lane used by more than one “odong-odong” and other motor vehicles! The fact that visitors not only have to master the art of cycling but also finding the right rhythm to ride it in competition with other “odong-odong” makes it a truly an unforgettable experience.
For a single ride of “odong-odong”, you would have to pay around IDR 20,000-IDR 25,000, depending on the type of the ride. The capacities of each “odong-odong” differ. There is also a tandem bike of two or three seats turned into “odong-odong” where the bikes are adorned with colorfoul lights.
After a ride of “odong-odong”, visitors can take a bite and relax at various “warung lesehan” (booths where visitors sit down without chairs) around the Square. Enjoying local dishes while engaging in a relaxing conversation with friends or families make for good memories that would make you want to always come back to Jogja. As students’ city – where all prices are determined against students and tourists financial capacities – Jogja has become the ultimate low-cost tourism destination that attracts many domestic and international tourists.
