Located in Harjobinangun, Pakem, Sleman, Yogyakarta, or less than five km away from Kaliurang Village, the Merapi Mount (MGM) Museum provides comprehensive information on volcanoes in Indonesia, in particular Mount Merapi of which the museum is dedicated for. The Museam was officially opened on 1 October 2009.
The Museum is sitting on a 3.5 hectare land on which the main building of 4.470 meter square is built. It is expected to become the new geo-tourism attraction site in the Province of Jogjakarta (DIY). The Museum has educational purposes, namely to serve as a platform for the development of volcanology, seismology, and other fields of natural disasters. It is against this background that the Museum is introduced as “Merapi, window of the earth”.
The Museum is constructed like a temple. The head of the museum building is shaped like a cone. It was taken from an analogy of the traditional belief that Mount Merapi is the lifeblood of the community. On the lobby wall, there are reliefs of Mount Merapi and the lives of residents in the surrounding areas. Once inside the lobby, visitors are greeted by a large thundering mock volcano which continually emits smoke and magma. The museum’s first floor collection is divided into several themed rooms including volcano world, on the Merapi volcano trail, mankind and volcano, earthquake and tsunami, landslide, survey equipment, extra-terrestrial volcanos and a diorama room. The Museum also displays materials from eruptions of Mount Merapi. Information on the danger of volcano eruption and the preparedness in case of a possible eruption is also available at the Museum.
