Ullen Sentalu is an acronym of the Javanese language “ULating bLENcong SEjatiNe TAtaraning Lumaku” which means “The light of blencong (oil lamp) that leads human beings in pacing and pursuing the journey of life”. The philosophy is taken from the blencong used in ‘wayang kulit’ performances (traditional puppet show) which represents the light that moves to guide and shine the pathways of our life.
Located in Pakem, Kaliurang, the museum provides interesting stories buried behind the walls of Jogja’s and Solo’s palaces. It displays the culture and life of the princesses as well as various batik collections from Jogja and Solo. It also features the Kings (Sultan) and Queens of Jogja with their day-to-day attire.
Ullen Sentalu museum also provides stories which convey the deep meanings in each pattern of batik produced by the ancestors. It also shows the history of ancient Javanese culture with all its rules and regulations.
Ullen Sentalu museum is like a time machine that will bring us to the past, a refresher to the Jogja and Solo kingdoms’ glorious era . As the museum is filled with philosophical values, the visitors will be able to learn the practical Javanese culture philosophy as interestingly narrated by the museum guide.
