The Exotic National Marine Park
Bunaken and its surrounding islands are a blessing for Indonesia. The national park provides habitat for 390 coral species which represent 63 genera and 15 families. It is estimated that there are 2.000 species of fish whose lives depend on coral reefs. Whales and dolphins of the cetacean family are often seen and until now, there are 14 species of cetacean including 7 species of dolphins. The are many small families of unusual fishes in the Bunaken national park such as boxfish, archerfishes, frogfishes, pigmy seahorse, ghostpipefish, and several pelagic fishes.
One of the most surprising discovery is coelacanth (ancient group of large, lobe finned fish) found in Manado Tua in 1998. They are one of the oldest living animals’ lineages on earth and have been grouped as an icon in North Sulawesi. The wealth of the ocean in the park is covered in an area of 75.265 hectares surrounding five islands of Manado Tua, Bunaken, Siladen, Mantehage, and Naen. The safest diving locations are on coastal areas surrounding those islands.
There are 20 diving spots around the five islands with depths up to 1.344 meters, however the 12 most visited diving spots by divers and lovers of the beautiful underwater scenery are in Bunaken.
Most of the 12 diving spots in Bunaken are stretched from the southeast to the northwest of the island. This area has underwater great walls, or what is more widely called as the hanging walls, or gigantic vertical coral walls that curved upwards. The hanging walls are the source of food for fishes surrounding Bunaken area. It is quite easy to reach the beauty offered by the 8,08 km national park in Manado bay.
