Jogja Hip Hop or Jogja Hip Hop Foundation (JHF) is a community in Jogja wherein hip hop music lovers gather together. JHF was established in 2003 by Marzuki Mohamad a.k.a Kill the DJ a.k.a Chebolang with the goal to promoteand support Javanese rap.
Starting from a community, JHF began its activitiesindependently where events and performances are funded from souvenirs and album sales. Sponsors began arriving and funding came after JHF gained recognition. Jogja Hip Hop starred in a worldwide computer software commercial.
With many small events such as “It’s Hip Hop Reunion” and” Angkringan Hip Hop”, JHF started Poetry Battle Project in 2006-2009 which explored the works of Indonesian poetry, from traditional to contemporary, with hip hop as its medium. The project resulted in two compilation albums; Poetry Battle 1 & 2 which succeeded in building JHF identity and creative attitude.
With its uniqueness, mixing hip hop and Javanese tradition, invitations to international stages started arriving for JHF. In 2009, they were invited to perform in the Esplanade, Singapore and in 2011 in New York and San Francisco.
In 2010, Jogja Hip Hop Foundation release a documentary called Hiphopdiningrat; a portrait of the Javanese hip hop journey. The film gained positive reactions from various media and received invitation to be screened in many international film festivals.
The limitations of Javanese language used in rap lyrics, a hard place to fit in the Indonesian music industry, is overcomed by their own ways. Nowadays, JHF’s songs have been the song of the Jogja’s people, especially with the release of ‘Jogja Istimewa’ which has become the life’s soundtrack to the people of Jogja. The song was collectively sung by Ki Jarot, the acronym for Kill the DJ, Jahanam, and Rotra, the three most consistent crews who produce javanese language hip hop songs and represent the existence of JHF.
