Kraton Ratu Boko, the Largest Palace Site in Yogyakarta
Majestic and exotic. Those will be the first impression of visitors of Kraton Ratu Boko, the largest palace site in Yogyakarta. Located in Dawung Village, Bokoharjo, Prambanan, Ratu Boko is an archeological complex site of 19 Ha, 3 km south of Prambanan Temple or about 19 km south of Yogyakarta.
The exoticness of the Kraton can best be observed during sunset and sunrise - when spectacular crimson sun rises in the East and sets in the West. A true masterpiece of our ancestors, the Kraton reflects the advanced civilization of the past. Ratu Boko does not display attribute of a temple; it is remains of a palace instead. Hence, the name Kraton Ratu Boko (Kraton: palace). According to local folklore, the site used to be a palace that belonged to Ratu Boko, the father of Rara Jonggrang (of the same folklore). The word Kraton originates from Ka-ra-tu-an which means a king’s palace.
Kraton Ratu Boko was first discovered by a Holland archeologist, HJ De Graaf in the 17th century. An inscription dated back to 792 BC, written in aksara pranagari and named Abhayagiriwihara, was found in the site. The inscription suggested that Kraton Ratu Boko was built by Rakai Panangkaran. According to archeologists, the word abhaya means without hagaya or peaceful, and giri means plateau. Hence, Abhyagiriwihara means a peaceful Buddhist monastery in the plateau. Under the ruling of Rakai Walaing Pu Kombayoni from 898-908 BC, the name Abhyagiriwihara was changed into Kraton Walaing.
