Basking in the Beauty of Candi Ijo
Yogyakarta is the city of many temples and archeological sites. One of which is Candi Ijo (the Temple of Ijo), which is the located at the top of a hill; making it the highest temple in Yogyakarta. The Temple was built on Bukit Ijo (Ijo Hill) of which height is 410 m above sea level. The temple compound consists of 17 building structures and is divided into 11 terraces.
The green sceneries surrounding the Temple make for a breathtaking view. Candi Ijo is located on the same route to Kraton Ratu Boko and Candi Banyunibo. At the intersection, look out for a signage for direction to the three temples.
The temple yards are the entrance to the main temple, stretching from the west to the east. Of the 11 terraces, the last or the highest terrace is the most sacred area wherein lies the main temple with three perwara (accompanist) temples and eight lingga patok. The structure of the main temple and the three perwara temples has been restored. The main temple has an entrance at the west side. The statues of Agastya, Ganesha, and Durga were previously ornaments on the template’s niches and now are kept in the Centre for Preservation of Cultural Heritage, Yogyakarta.
Inside the temple there lie the Lingga-Yoni archeological remains which represent the conjoined God of Siva and the Goddess of Parvati.
